TBF Juniors / High School Clubs Championship

The Bass Federation of South Carolina hosted their Youth programs state championship on Lake Murray on May 19th. In all there were 98 young
anglers from 17 schools and clubs from all around SC. at Dreher Island State Park ready to compete. TBF is affiliated with FLW Outdoors and has
been working with DNR of SC to expand the Juniors program to include school clubs. Two Juniors State Champions would be decided at this tournament,, one in the 11-14 age group and one from the 15-18 group. They will go onto The Juniors World Championship sponsored by The National Guard at Lake
Lanier, Ga. later this year and compete for $5000 in scholarship money. Also the club with the heaviest weight for their team of 6 would be crowned
as State Champion Club and display the Champions Trophy for the coming year.

For the second year Berkley Products and Abu Garcia were our major sponsors and provided rod & reel combinations for all the winners as well
as cash gift cards. They also very generously provided gift bags of baits and line and had t-shirts made for all commemorating the event. We also
would like to thank Herndon Chevrolet and Sportsman’s Warehouse for their support. In the end it would come down to this. The Juniors State Champion in the
11-14 age group was Tanner Lindler of Lexington with 4 bass weighing in at 7.84 lbs. Tanner has been a member of Saint Andrews Jr. Bass Anglers since
he was old enough and in now a young veteran to our tournaments. Tanner is quickly becoming an expert “shakey head “worm fisherman.
In the 15-18 group Clayton Lowder 16 of Mayesville with a 5 bass limit of 14.30 lbs. Also starting fishing at a very young age, Clayton is a member of
Santee Jr. Bass Club. Clayton says his favorite technique is top water. Both received $500 checks from TBF of SC to help with their expenses to the
World Championship.

The winning team honors would go to Saint Andrews Jr. Bass Anglers. Team members include Kyle Black, Chris Blanchette, Tanner Lindler,
Michael Dial, Shane Cantley and David Bradley. They had a culmative total weight of 45.21 lbs. All were awarded rod & reels from Abu Garcia as
well as cash gift cards from Berkley. The second place team was Mid-Carolina Junior Anglers with a weight of 27.11 lbs. They all received gift
cards donated by Sportsman’s Warehouse. There were also Big Bass honors to be celebrated. They would be, with a  5.28 largemouth
Jacob Gray(11-14) of Abbeville. Michael Morris (15-18) with his 4.96 lb. lunker. They also received rod & reel combos as well as plaques
for their achievement. This was only the second year for this event run in combination with the school program. In only that time it has tripled
in size of participants. We would like to thank all of our supporters as well as the boat captains that volunteered their time and use of their
boats for the day. We are looking forward to next year already. For more information about The Bass Federation and our programs please

Fulmer and Drake Win Seniors Tournament

By David Larrabee, Contributing Writer

Nothing exciting happened at the Lake Murray Seniors Bass Club tournament last week:  same old, same old.  Yep, Randy Fulmer won.  Once again, he had over 20 pounds and Big Bass of the Day.  I’m sure his partner, Sam Drake, helped a little, but most of the members know that Randy seems to find the places where the big fish hang out.  Having lived on this lake most (all?) of his life must have helped.  Randy did tell me he used top water baits all day.  Some fishermen will look at what baits others have tied on to try to get some insight.  And I know this may be hard to believe, but there are some anglers out there who will purposely tie on a bait that is not working, and leave it out so as to mislead others.  Randy does not strike me as one of those people, so when I saw a “big fish” bait on one of his rods, I was not surprised.  As for what that bait was, I’m not telling.
I was not totally accurate in saying that nothing exciting happened last week.  A very large thunderstorm was approaching the lake at launch time, so there was some discussion about postponing.  Tournament Director, Jock Prestigiacomo, made the decision to take off as scheduled.  He was one of the few people who remembered that weather systems have a tendency to break up just as they reach the shores of Lake Murray.  And that is exactly what happened.  The large storm split up, with part going south and part going north.  Though I could see lightning and hear thunder throughout the early morning hours, the only precipitation that fell on me and my partner were a few showers.
Like I said, Randy Fulmer and Sam Drake took First Place with 21.27 pounds which included the Big Bass of the day that weighed 6.44.  Randy still has a ways to go to catch up with Jock’s Big Bass of the Year, which weighed 8.74 pounds.  Bride’s Maid, Dave Slaughter, and his partner, Wayne Chester, finished in Second Place with 16.78.  Dave finished in second last month as well, and is slowly creeping up on Randy’s weights, well ahead of those who would take third.  Skip Parker and Burl “I got another good partner!” Fleming took Third Place with 12.03, while Fourth Place went to John Callahan and David Settle (11.99).  Tom Weigand and Mike Catt had 11.33 to claim Fifth Place, and David Larrabee and Lonnie Lindler had 11.17 for Sixth Place.  Though I once again beat Sam Gray, in all fairness, I need to point out that Sam is ahead of me (by two points) for this season.  Bill Crapps and Earl Greenaway had five fish weighing 11.10 to take Seventh Place.  Eighth Place went to Bill Lee and Kevin Omerod (11.02) while Ninth Place was won by Bud Dalton and Willie Crocker with 10.93.  Even though they only caught four fish, Marvin Brown and Joe Abdalla still managed to take Tenth Place (10.41).
The next meeting of the Lake Murray Seniors Bass Club will be Wednesday, June 20th at 11:00 AM in the Macedonia Lutheran Church meeting room.  The regular, monthly tournament will be Thursday the 21st.  The June tournament is significant, not because it is only six hours long due to the heat, but because it will be the last contest where 12 inch bass will be allowed.  New DNR regulations which change the minimum size to 14 inches will go into affect July 1st.  There could be a lot of empty bags from that point on.
Anyone wishing to learn more about our club can check out our web site at lakemurrayseniorsbassclub.com.

TBF of South Carolina Youth Junior Championship
May 19th t Dreher Island State Park
It is the intention of The Bass Federation (TBF) and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ Aquatic Education Section to make this event as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. Therefore, in addition to the two individual State Champions, there will also be a Champion School Team. This will be decided by the total weight of all team members combined. The winning team will hold that honor for the year and display the Championship Trophy at their school during that time.
Schools may send a team of up to six members, three from each age group (11-14 and 15-18) IF YOU CAN, otherwise any 6 members may be sent to the TBF of South Carolina Juniors Championship. No matter what, you must send an even number of anglers. It is still required that there be one boat and an adult volunteer driver for every two anglers.

West Columbia, SC (WLTX) --- The Pelion golf team finished fourth in the Class 2A state golf championship Tuesday at Indian River Golf Club in West Columbia.

Pelion, the host school, finished behind 2A champion Pendleton, Bishop England and Central.

Senior Cody Proveaux, who has signed to play golf at Clemson, shot a 2-over par 73.

Proveaux has compiled an impressive resume and added to it last week when he was one of four recipients of the Byron Nelson International Junior Golfer Award. This honor goes to promising junior golfers but also those who excel in the classroom and the community.

In November, Proveaux joined a list that includes Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson as winners of the Rolex Junior Player of the Year. That award earned him a trip to Memphis to play in the PGA Tour's FedEx St. Jude Classic.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Readers in the Midlands could be in for a steamy summer, and not because of the weather.

Tie, masks and handcuffs add up to number one for the Fifty Shades trilogy, and readers across the country are anxious to get their hands on a copy.

"If the people in the community want it and there's that much of a demand for it, certainly just like other best sellers if there's that much of a demand for it we're gonna make sure it's available here at the library," said Padgett Mozingo with the Richland County Public Library.

Fifty Shades of Grey and its two follow-up novel--Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed--currently hold the top three slots on the USA Today Best Seller List.

LITTLE MOUNTAIN, SC (WIS) - If you know anything about the town of Little Mountain, then you know it is the home of their annual reunion.

However, there won't be a reunion at all this year because the association that put on the event couldn't come to an agreement with the town's mayor or council.

"We are liable for anything that happens in the park, although the park doesn't belong to us," association board member Woody Kaminer said. "What if someone trips over a ditch? Are we going to have to be responsible for that someone falls down a hill and breaks a leg? Are we responsible for that? These are things that concerned us."

Kaminer says the concern over the reunion association being held liable was so great that they had no choice but to cancel one of the oldest festivals in the state.

The special guest at the session is Conroy’s daughter, Melissa, who is one of the 80 authors attending the festival. On May 20, Conroy will moderate “Pat Conroy Recommends,” a session with authors Bernie Schein, Scott Graber and John Warley.

All events Saturday and May 20 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center are free, but seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis, which is to say capacity will be reached quickly for the Conroy sessions. Who else is there to see? Here are nine others to check out.

Gilbert twins never far apart

Jenna and Jared Williams were born one minute apart, and ever since that has been the most distance between them.

The twins have been on a parallel course for most of their lives, and it continued on Friday when both contended for Class 2A Upper State titles — older twin Jenna with the Gilbert softball team, Jared with the Gilbert baseball team.

Both were playing games at the same time on nearby fields.

Small-town Lexington is turning to big-city tools to make many improvements proposed by an advisory panel.

In the next 18 months, town leaders intend to:

• Create a development corporation as a partner of Town Hall that can acquire sites and offer more incentives to businesses. Its main goal will be developing public and private anchors downtown, such as a performing arts center.

• Christen downtown — bounded by U.S. 1, U.S. 378 and S.C. 6 — as the Historic Triangle District and promote it as a tourist stop.

• Start tax increment financing (TIF) — revenue generated by new development in a specified area — to pay for landscaping roads and other projects downtown and on a two-mile stretch of U.S. 378, just west of I-20. Lexington County and Lexington 1 schools must buy into the step and are awaiting a specific proposal.

• Provide aid to help businesses on Main Street to upgrade the appearance of storefronts and offices.

• Seek a new sales tax or revive a meal tax abolished in 2005 to help pay for improvements.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden will be host to two juvenile Komodo dragons starting on Friday, May 4.

"We are excited to give our visitors an opportunity to watch as these young dragons grow into powerful predators," said Scott Pfaff, curator of herpetology at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, in a written statement. "Komodos in captivity grow at a faster-pace, typically reaching adulthood in about 5 to 6 years, while dragons in the wild reach maturity in about 20 years."

Komodos (also known as Komodo monitors) are the world's largest lizards, and can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh more than 200 pounds. The animals are native to the Indonesian Island.  The ones on display were hatched last August at the Los Angeles Zoo.  When the Komodos go on display, they'll be joined by five Galapagos tortoise babies born last October.

Wildlife changes hands

When the ball dropped in Times Square on midnight 2012 and a new year began, change also came to one of Columbia’s biggest animal rescue missions. After eight years of serving as the director of Carolina Wildlife Care ( CWC), Joanna Weitzel announced last August she was passing the baton to Anne Palyok in January of this year. Paylok’s official title will be director of rehabilitation.

Weitzel said the decision to step down was a difficult one as she loved the organization, but she wanted to open up her schedule so she would have more time to spend with her family.

“My daughter is entering high school, and my son will be going to middle school this fall,” Weitzel said. “The executive director position is a very demanding one, and while I’ve loved every minute of it, I just feel at this point in my children’s lives I want to have a more active role. These are great years for them, and I want to savor this time. Once it’s over, and they go off to college, it will be time I won’t ever get back.”

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A federal court has given the state of South Carolina until Monday to clarify whether it would be feasible to implement a statewide voter identification requirement for this year's elections.

A panel of three federal judges is considering the lawsuit filed by state Attorney General Alan Wilson. Earlier this year, Wilson sued U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder over the U.S. Justice Department's rejection of the law.

Officials have estimated it could take voters up to about two months to get the right ID needed to vote.

Groups that have intervened in the case on the side of the federal government say there is simply not enough time left to both educate voters about the law and give them a chance to get the required identification before the November elections

Lexington, SC (WLTX) -- Lexington opened up the baseball playoffs Thursday night with a 13-3 win over Lugoff-Elgin. But it was the pre-game ceremony that drew the biggest ovation.

Kennedy Branham from Lexington Middle School threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Kennedy has been undergoing chemotherapy for brain cancer.

Her appearance at the park drew a standing ovation from the crowd and the Lexington baseball team showed its support for her by showing up to the game with shaved heads.
An already big week for Kennedy will be even more so Saturday night when he fulfills her dream of attending the prom at Lexington High School.
