Fulmer and Drake Win Seniors Tournament

By David Larrabee, Contributing Writer

Nothing exciting happened at the Lake Murray Seniors Bass Club tournament last week:  same old, same old.  Yep, Randy Fulmer won.  Once again, he had over 20 pounds and Big Bass of the Day.  I’m sure his partner, Sam Drake, helped a little, but most of the members know that Randy seems to find the places where the big fish hang out.  Having lived on this lake most (all?) of his life must have helped.  Randy did tell me he used top water baits all day.  Some fishermen will look at what baits others have tied on to try to get some insight.  And I know this may be hard to believe, but there are some anglers out there who will purposely tie on a bait that is not working, and leave it out so as to mislead others.  Randy does not strike me as one of those people, so when I saw a “big fish” bait on one of his rods, I was not surprised.  As for what that bait was, I’m not telling.
I was not totally accurate in saying that nothing exciting happened last week.  A very large thunderstorm was approaching the lake at launch time, so there was some discussion about postponing.  Tournament Director, Jock Prestigiacomo, made the decision to take off as scheduled.  He was one of the few people who remembered that weather systems have a tendency to break up just as they reach the shores of Lake Murray.  And that is exactly what happened.  The large storm split up, with part going south and part going north.  Though I could see lightning and hear thunder throughout the early morning hours, the only precipitation that fell on me and my partner were a few showers.
Like I said, Randy Fulmer and Sam Drake took First Place with 21.27 pounds which included the Big Bass of the day that weighed 6.44.  Randy still has a ways to go to catch up with Jock’s Big Bass of the Year, which weighed 8.74 pounds.  Bride’s Maid, Dave Slaughter, and his partner, Wayne Chester, finished in Second Place with 16.78.  Dave finished in second last month as well, and is slowly creeping up on Randy’s weights, well ahead of those who would take third.  Skip Parker and Burl “I got another good partner!” Fleming took Third Place with 12.03, while Fourth Place went to John Callahan and David Settle (11.99).  Tom Weigand and Mike Catt had 11.33 to claim Fifth Place, and David Larrabee and Lonnie Lindler had 11.17 for Sixth Place.  Though I once again beat Sam Gray, in all fairness, I need to point out that Sam is ahead of me (by two points) for this season.  Bill Crapps and Earl Greenaway had five fish weighing 11.10 to take Seventh Place.  Eighth Place went to Bill Lee and Kevin Omerod (11.02) while Ninth Place was won by Bud Dalton and Willie Crocker with 10.93.  Even though they only caught four fish, Marvin Brown and Joe Abdalla still managed to take Tenth Place (10.41).
The next meeting of the Lake Murray Seniors Bass Club will be Wednesday, June 20th at 11:00 AM in the Macedonia Lutheran Church meeting room.  The regular, monthly tournament will be Thursday the 21st.  The June tournament is significant, not because it is only six hours long due to the heat, but because it will be the last contest where 12 inch bass will be allowed.  New DNR regulations which change the minimum size to 14 inches will go into affect July 1st.  There could be a lot of empty bags from that point on.

The TBF of SC State Youth Championship

The Bass Federation (TBF) of South Carolina &
South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR)
TBF of South Carolina Youth Junior Championship
May 19th t Dreher Island State Park
It is the intention of The Bass Federation (TBF) and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ Aquatic Education Section to make this event as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. Therefore, in addition to the two individual State Champions, there will also be a Champion School Team. This will be decided by the total weight of all team members combined. The winning team will hold that honor for the year and display the Championship Trophy at their school during that time.
Schools may send a team of up to six members, three from each age group (11-14 and 15-18) IF YOU CAN, otherwise any 6 members may be sent to the TBF of South Carolina Juniors Championship. No matter what, you must send an even number of anglers. It is still required that there be one boat and an adult volunteer driver for every two anglers.

A Special Opportunity for Special Ladies

“Ladies Only, Fun on the Lake”

“Ladies Day on the Lake” will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday June 19, 2012 at Lighthouse Marina, 1925 Johnson Marina Road, Chapin, SC.

The Lake Murray Association, SC Department of Natural Resources, Lake Murray Power Squadron and Columbia Power Sports will host this popular annual event, which is open to all ladies 17 years of age and older.

The purpose of Ladies’ Day is to instruct women about all elements of safe boating. This includes how to operate and dock a powerboat safely, back a boat trailer into the water to launch and retrieve boats. Each participant will have the opportunity to get into a DNR boat to take her turn operating it on the open water and to dock it at the marina.

This will all be done under the competent and patient guidance of the DNR instructors. These are just some of the activities for this fun-filled day! A course in the safe operation of personal watercraft will be offered again this year by Columbia Power Sports. A safety presentation will be conducted by personnel of the Lake Murray Power Squadron.

Your DNR and Columbia Power Sports instructors are experienced specialists in watercraft operation and safety. They take the “mystery and frustration” out of boating and trailering. They teach you how to handle a boat and trailer confidently so that your boating excursions will be safe and enjoyable. LMA representatives will provide lunch and refreshments and will assist in coordinating the day’s activities.

Past participants have described this event as one of the most fun-filled and pleasurable activities they have had on the lake. You can ask all of those questions that you hesitate to ask and no one will laugh at you. No husbands or boyfriends are allowed – this day is for the ladies only.

This event-packed day on beautiful Lake Murray is always a sellout (only 32 spaces are available), so it is not too early to reserve your spot. The $35.00 fee is required in advance to hold your place. The fee covers your lunch, drinks, and all other expenses for the day.

Act now and sign up! For more information call Kenneth Fox at (803) 604-1409, or print your application here:

Lake Murray Seniors March 2012 Results

Fulmer and Callahan Win Seniors Tournament

By David Larrabee, Contributing Writer

Because of a very mild winter, and an extremely warm March, water temps in Lake Murray have already reached the upper 60’s to low 70’s.  The spawn is on in most of the lake.  Not having gone up the rivers lately, I couldn’t tell you what’s happening there.  But fish can be found on beds for those willing to look for them.  That’s where you will find the bigger fish.  But not me.  I am one of those strange fishermen who don’t understand why people would disrupt the reproduction cycle of the species they spend most of the year hunting for.  Considering the fact that (in some studies) there is only a 2% survival rate of bass eggs and fry, it seems counter-productive.  If I ruled the world, you could be sure of two things.  There wouldn’t be any tournaments during the spawn, and life as we know it would come to an end.   Those Mayans have nothing on me!
Of the twenty-nine Lake Murray Seniors Bass Club teams that signed up for the March tournament, only one pair did not catch a fish.  That was not due to a lack of skill.  The boater side of the duo got sick at the last minute and thus could not compete.  As far as the rest of the contestants were concerned, twenty-one of twenty-eight teams came back to Dreher with a limit of five fish. They also returned with numerous stories about catching fifteen to twenty bass. The biggest problem was that most of the fish were the small males that a blind man could find in the back of almost any cut or cove.  Flukes, crank baits and shaky heads were the preferred baits, but those that threw creature baits were able to get the bigger fish to bite.  And guess who threw such a bait.
Randy “Van Dam” Fulmer and his partner, John Callahan, supposedly went up river where Randy threw a creature bait to get their winning bag of 21.48 pounds.  Needless to say, he also had the Big Bass of the day (5.96) and easily took First Place, seven pounds ahead of the next largest limit.  Second Place went to Bud Dalton and Burl Fleming with 14.21, while 14.15 got Third Place for Earl Mueller and Lonnie Lindler.  Sam Gray beat me again when he and his partner, Joe Abdala brought in five keepers weighing 14.11 to claim Fourth Place.  Fifth Place went to John Anderson and Mike Bailey with 11.97.  Jim Cushman and Jack Hamby earned Sixth Place honors with 11.89, while Skip Parker and Wayne “What did you say?” Chester had 11.52.  Eighth Place went to Ron Wood and Mike Catt with 11.28, and 11.16 was good enough for Tom Weigand and Ed Kelly to tie for Ninth and Tenth Place with Wayne Fulmer and Billy Howell.
The next One-on-One (an open tournament) will take place Thursday, April 12th out of Dreher State Park starting at safe light.  It is a seven hour tournament and the cost is $20 per person.  This is an individual versus individual tournament unlike the usual team tournament.  The next Lake Murray Seniors monthly meeting will be at 11:00 AM at the Macedonia Lutheran Church on April 17th with the tournament being held on Thursday the 18th.  Men 55 or older are welcome to join.  Anyone wishing more information about the Lake Murray Seniors Bass Club can visit our website, lakemurrayseniorsbassclub.com, or call the current president (that’s me) at 932-0141.
